Step-by-step guide to getting Import Export Code (IEC) in India. Who needs it, documents required, DGFT process, and benefits.
Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit unique identification number issued by the DGFT under the Ministry of Commerce. It is mandatory for any business engaged in import or export activities. Without a valid IEC, customs clearance is impossible. IEC is PAN-based and valid for life with no annual renewal. The digital DGFT portal has made the process fully paperless.
Key Tip:
Apply online through the DGFT portal using PAN and Aadhaar. Ensure PAN is linked with Aadhaar to avoid rejection. Processing takes 2-3 working days.
Mandatory for: importers and exporters of goods, service exporters, businesses claiming duty drawback, intermediaries in cross-border trade, and customs brokers. Exempt: personal use imports within baggage rules, government departments, and SEZ units under exemptions.
PAN card, Aadhaar card, business address proof, bank certificate or cancelled cheque, incorporation certificate (for companies), partnership deed (for firms), LLP agreement, GST certificate if applicable, digital photograph, board resolution for companies.
Step 1: Visit DGFT website. Step 2: Select New IEC Registration. Step 3: Enter PAN and Aadhaar for validation. Step 4: Fill business details, address, bank info. Step 5: Select import/export categories. Step 6: Upload documents. Step 7: Pay Rs. 500 fee online. Step 8: Submit. IEC issued within 2-3 working days.
Update changes within 30 days. File annual export import returns if thresholds exceeded. Maintain records for 5 years. Quote IEC on all invoices and shipping bills. Non-compliance can lead to suspension or cancellation.
