Complete guide to GST return filing in India. GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9 — due dates, penalties, ITC reconciliation, and tips.
The Goods and Services Tax regime requires registered taxpayers to file periodic returns. The most commonly filed returns include GSTR-1 for outward supplies (due 11th monthly or 13th quarterly), GSTR-3B for summary return and tax payment (due 20th monthly or 24th quarterly), and GSTR-9 for annual return (due December 31). Small taxpayers with turnover up to Rs. 5 Crore can opt for the QRMP scheme allowing quarterly filing with monthly tax payments.
Due Dates:
GSTR-1 monthly: 11th. GSTR-1 quarterly: 13th. GSTR-3B monthly: 20th. GSTR-3B quarterly: 24th. GSTR-9: December 31. Late fee: Rs. 50/day for GSTR-1/3B, Rs. 200/day for GSTR-9.
GSTR-1 reports all sales invoices, credit notes, debit notes, and advances. Taxpayers above Rs. 5 Crore turnover must file monthly; those below can file quarterly. B2B invoices above Rs. 2.5 Lakh require customer GSTIN. Data auto-populates buyer GSTR-2A for ITC claims. Late filing penalty: Rs. 50/day.
GSTR-3B is a self-declared summary return capturing outward supplies, ITC claimed, and tax paid. Must be filed every period even with zero activity. Includes tables for supplies, ITC, exempt supplies, ITC reversal, and tax payment. Late filing: Rs. 50/day plus 18% interest on outstanding tax.
GSTR-9 consolidates all monthly/quarterly returns for the financial year. Mandatory for taxpayers with turnover above Rs. 2 Crore. Contains 8 parts covering basic details, outward supplies, ITC, tax paid, demands, refunds, and additional information. Due by December 31. Late fee: Rs. 200/day capped at 0.5% of turnover.
GSTR-2B is available on the 14th of each month. ITC can only be claimed on invoices appearing in GSTR-2B where the supplier has paid tax. Reconcile monthly by matching purchase register with GSTR-2B, identifying missing invoices, and communicating with suppliers. Unmatched ITC must be reversed.
GSTR-1: Rs. 50/day. GSTR-3B: Rs. 50/day (Rs. 25 CGST + Rs. 25 SGST) plus 18% interest. GSTR-9: Rs. 200/day capped at 0.5% of turnover. Non-filing for 2 consecutive months leads to registration suspension. Non-filing for 6 months leads to cancellation.
